Voice Tips from Pamela » Learn to use your Voice
A well used speaking voice can help protect an abused or overused singing voice, but in most cases I hear misused speaking voices taking their toll on a great singing voice. Singers... please put some focus on your speaking voice too. There are simple ways to build more balance in the speaking & singing voice in a matter of minutes. Yes, it can take days, months or even years to work our voices into problems (bad habits, breathing, tension, posture, throat clearing, colds, low self esteem).
It does not have to take long to make an improvement or great changes.
Voices can be improved within minutes, when given the right tools or right information. Step by step...always go for optimum results!
Singers spend a lot more time speaking than singing. Most of that talking is already feeling strained, tired, burnt out from a show the night before. Most are not even aware of problems they create for themselves while speaking. A voice that is placed too low in pitch, pressing, too loud or too low in volume, unsupported, overtired, raspy, dried out from drinking alcohol, dehydrated (not enough water), irritated from smoking or 2nd hand smoke, no sleep, etc.... OUCH!
The voice is designed to speak or sing 24 hours a day w/out strain, pain or problems! If you can't, then you're doing something wrong.
The quality of your voice also depends on the position of the chords and the amount of air you move through them.
The Basics... Good care, understanding how the voice works, practice, moving up & down w/out strain, techniques, breathing, articulation are all essential keys to maintaining a more consistent sound.
The voice can seem like a puzzle at times...but by placing the right pieces together, it eventually clicks!
Every voice can be improved.
By becoming more aware of what bad habits you've developed or what techniques you are using...They are either helping you or they are not!
Only by understanding, correcting & eliminating some of these habits can you start to feel a big difference in gaining more certainty and control over your voice.
By bringing more order & certainty into your voice you lessen the chaos and mystery of not knowing what is going on with it...
Much less wondering about what will it sound like today? Will I hit that note? Will it work?
Replace all the why's with more and more Know-How.
We singers like that!
